The novel revolves around Alex , a rebellious young man who leads a group of his friends and lives a life full of violence, theft, and assault, but at the same time he is interested in classical music, especially Beethoven.
After being arrested for his crimes, Alex undergoes an experimental therapy designed to prevent him from committing violence by associating his feelings of nausea and psychological pain with violent behavior. This is where the novel begins to pose its fundamental question: if a person is deprived of the ability to choose evil, does doing good have any real value?
Through the story, Burgess discusses issues of freedom, individual will, violence, political control, and the rehabilitation of criminals , and presents the reader with a conflict between society’s desire to eliminate crime and the human right to have one’s own will and choices.
